Site of the Month
October 2005 The General's Review My sort of webpage. Shaun Bryant, Ian Smith and friends have put together a site that has no pretensions beyond being a showcase for top quality figures. No painting tips (though these are promised soon), just inspirational images, showing the sort of collections that sadly rarely or never leave home. They are also blazing the trail in 40mm gaming, which is certainly hot at the moment. You will find ancients, medievals, LOTR, ACW and lots of Napoleonics here from some of the leading lights of the Northern UK hobby. Highly recommended and it should grow steadily into a huge resource.

Reference Sites
Newark Irregulars The reason my list is so short is that you can go here for the best set of links I know. It will take you hours of surfing to get through this lot, without even thinking about secondary links, and the choice is first rate. A stunning piece of work, one can only imagine the hours of effort that went into this indispensable resource.
The Miniatures Page The famous site devotedly maintained by Bill Armintrout. You can go here for the latest news, updated daily, plus a comprehensive listing of just about everything else in the hobby - manufacturers, rules, links - the works. If you can't find it on this site or the one above, you are stuck with the Web search engines. At something over 700,000 hits per month, you don't need me to tell you it is extremely popular and the best hobby news resource there is.
Battlegames.co.uk Henry Hyde's up and coming site. Very UK centric (which is good) and well worth your support. I just get the feeling there is more on offer here than I can find.
Scale Model Index Tony Matteliano runs this amazing resource, clearly more related to the modelling side of the hobby, but with hundreds of useful links.
Total Model A brand new portal site with an interesting mix of models, miniature features, and news. Superbly presented and if the content keeps coming, a sure winner.
MagWeb  Basically, an on-line magazine library covering miniatures, boardgaming, history and modelling subjects. Around 100 titles are covered. An impressive resource, albeit with a small membership fee, which is well worth it.
GW Gateway An interesting portal leading to all sorts of unusual sites.
Ed's Hobby Hovel An old site (if there can be such a thing on the Web) which still contains loads of information and links.
ConsimWorld A massive discussion board with hundreds of subjects, a news resource, on-line company support and even some reviews. Emphasis on boardgames, but history and miniatures feature. Excellent site, and a daily visit for me.

Wargames Forum Lots of interesting articles and features here, including a growing, actively updated news section.
Histofigs A huge resource focussing on the very active French hobby, but there is plenty here for everyone, including flags and uniform info.
Miniature Wargaming Tons of stuff here, with a nice F/SFF slant to balance out the historicals.
Wargames Review An unusual take on, well, almost everything really. Some excellent articles, plenty of controversy, and (unusual for the web and the hobby) lots of decent reviews.
The Little Grenadier A new site from Gary Chalk, featuring an online shop and also a web magazine. Initial articles looking good, and you've gotta love that logo. [DEAD LINK. SITE CLOSED.]
Lead Addict At last, a decent web magazine. Check it out, I think you'll like what you see. Can he keep it up? [No!]
Blogs Frequently updated personal news sites. Low on colour, high on content. Quality varies! You are going to be seeing quite a few of these...

Painting Clubs or individuals who are good with a brush, tips, reference etc.
The League of Augsburg An inspirational website that really serves to highlight how few such quality resources are available. My only complaint is that it is not ten times bigger and updated weekly. One of my favourite sites. SITE RELAUNCHED 30/12/04.
David Imrie League of Augsburg member David Imrie's new site. Further comment is superfluous!
Phil Olley's War Cabinet League of Augsburg co-founder Phil Olley has now also added his own personal slant to web design. Excellent pictures of Phil's enviable collection, including his inspirational Sassanids. Phil also promises frequent articles on the hobby, AAR's, painting or anything that crosses his mind. Check out the retro gaming section - very cool.
Joe Videki Another superb brushman. If I ever paint a figure as well as any of those on show here, I will be a happy man. The gallery pictures speak for themselves - the Foundry Frank is hard to believe, as is the base - and there is even a workbench shot, always a plus! Excellent links too, many of which are borrowed for here.
Steve Dean One of my top five favourite painters, and with a fair wind and a good subject, the very best. This is Steve's commercial site, and has hundreds of great images to inspire we mere mortals.
  Brian Phillips
Figure Painting
Brian is one of the talented group of painters from North of the Border. Must be something in the water. He is, in my ever so 'umble, right up there with the Augsburgers in quality and if you get a chance to see his figures in the flesh, I think you will find them even better than the images on the site. Brian has also kindly provided a 'paint recipe' chart which will help all us lesser mortals. Nice bases too. A great start, excellent layout, and I look forward to the updates.
Frothers Formerly a site discussing only unpainted lead, the Frothers (en route to world domination) now have a painting forum. Should be good, and mind your language.
Quindia Studios Great new site! Lots of pictures, superb layout and an interesting mix of subjects with much more to come. I like it all, but I like the superheroes best. Highly recommended.
Back of Beyond Times A very clever site indeed, and very good quality painting as well - check out the Romanovs for starters. When Herr Bews gets more pulp figures painted, he will be dangerous. A challenge to maintain this one, but what is there is more than good enough. I love the Arctic survey team. See also link below.
WitchHunter This is a link from Back of Beyond Times which basically shows Alex Bews's entire collection of figures, of all themes. Prolific eh? He has the knack for making even poor figures look passable. And the good ones, well, you can see for yourself.
Agis Neugebauer Another talented German painter, who covers a range of subjects with great competence and a very clean style. Great galleries.
Fantasy Miniatures Holger Schmidt's excellent gallery. Despite the title, some historicals are starting to appear.
Figurine Painters A bit sparse so far, but a promising start.
Flames of War Difficult to know where to put this one, like Elheim, as it covers a lot of areas including its own rule set. But the painting is great, so it goes here. Look out for the tutorials - camouflage smocks? No problem.
Wargamer's Tavern Matt Pavone's impressive new site. Contains an excellent gallery section, and period specific commentary - a great idea that I will happily borrow soon. Well worth a visit to the best new site to come along for a while.
The Iron Brigade Another worryingly small group of gamers who nevertheless turn out excellent work, in volume. The Iron Brigade is just three men and a cantiniere strong, but put on some superb games around the Northern shows. A nicely designed site too - what are you waiting for?
The Kapiti Fusiliers Great club site, full of well painted troop pics. Excellent links too.
Tricorne Eric Veitl's excellent site, featuring his 18th century models.
Verzani Productions A largely commercial site, but if you like the bright and bold fantasy style, you will not be disappointed here.
Roly Hermans A one man website industry. Roly designs a site for each period he covers, which lead me to think he only did SYW. How wrong can you be.....
Frédéric Machu You'll need a little French here, but even pressing random links will still turn up some very nice figures. Superb site.
Cool Mini Or Not? Warning! This site can be a huge drain on time. A great idea, based on the sites where the public vote (with brutal honesty) on your girl or boy friend, now transferred to miniatures. Plenty of amazing figures, scads of average ones, and a growing number of historical subjects.
Crappy Mini or Not? The miniatures equivalent of Changing Rooms. Take one of those old Bring & Buy figures covered in green glossy snot, and give it a facelift. Some remarkable transformations.
Miniwars.com A big site that had escaped my attention. Nice galleries and plenty of information.
London Gamers Lovely site, mad club, loads of pictures of Gripping Beast and other figures.
Jennifer Haley One of the best painters I have found (so far) on the web. Amazing work, and colour sense to die for. If only she had a taste for historical figures....
Shaping Middle Earth A nice site concentrating on dioramas made from Mithril miniatures.
True Believers A lovely little miniatures site. Very much in tune with my interests, and beautifully presented.
Newark Painting A small but high quality site showing off the owner's collection of miniatures.
Par Toutatis A very good looking French site with some interesting stuff if you dig deep. The Galleries are outstanding. English version coming soon.
Imaginate A new site with a wealth of painting tips.
Vallejo Paints While it would be improper for me to claim sole credit, I helped introduce the wonderful Model Colour paints to the UK and US hobbies. I use them almost exclusively now. Check out the Model Air range if you airbrush and the new Game Color range which will appear strangely familiar.
Painting With Vallejos Although aimed at larger scale figures, there are some very good tips here. There is also a paint recipe chart for three shade effects.
The Jenova Project A Danish fantasy figure painter with an unusual style, which I rather like. Excellent tutorials and a large gallery. She hates historicals, so naturally I see this as a challenge! I have already planted a link, and expect to commence mining operations soon.
Brush Strokes One of the best painting services in the UK, a very talented exponent of the Dallimore School.
Kevin Dallimore  As the pioneer of the black undercoat style, the man with a lot to answer for! Even a brief tour through this site will show you why Mr Dallimore and Special Forces represent many people's idea of The Best.
The Mad Scotsman Dallimore School. Bloody talented. Next.
Ares Painting (aka Andrew Taylor) Dallimore School. Bloody talented. Next.
Spencer Keen Dallimore School. Bloody talented. Next.
Tony Harwood I really like this site. Right up my street. Excellent scratchbuilt models. Look for more from Tony soon.
Napoleonic Wargaming Gallery Exactly what it says on the tin. Loads of great pictures of Napoleonics. The sort of thing I would have done if I had enough painted troops!
Elheim 20mm An outstanding site, discovered only recently. 20mm WWII is the exclusive focus, and there is work here of a very high standard in the galleries. Difficult to know where to put this one as it covers many areas.
The General's Review My sort of webpage. Shaun Bryant, Ian Smith and friends have put together a site that has no pretensions beyond being a showcase for top quality figures. No painting tips (though these are prmoised), just inspirational images, showing the sort of collections that sadly rarely or never leave home. They are also blazing the trail in 40mm gaming, which is hot at the moment. You will find ancients, medievals, LOTR, ACW and lots of Napoleonics here from some of the leading lights of the Northern UK hobby. Highly recommended and it should grow steadily into a huge resource.
Jakob Rune Neilsen An extremely talented painter of fantasy subjects, if somewhat full of himself. Perhaps in this case it is justifiable, or it may simply be language and the prices commanded generating the hubris. Either way, have a good long look at these wonderful figures. Lots of good tips too, including his masterful metallic effects. And along with Joe Videki, he makes the best bases I have seen.
Grey Goat Fantasy figures in the main, painted to a high standard.
Dragon Miniatures Again, all fantasy, and some very nice paintjobs.
Putty & Paint Sculpting and painting. A very good standard, but not the best.
minigrrrl.com Tammy Haye's site. One of the best exponents of the 'Eavy Metal style. And prices to match! Good tips.
Jason Richards Remarkable technique on show here, most unusual.
Mayne Thiele Another fantasy painter of exceptional skill.
The Lone Brushman Fantasy only, but painting skills that are not to be sniffed at.
Paintfront A very nice site showing AB 15mm Napoleonics. These figures have such a tug for me. Must resist...
Richard Poisson Every year when I go to the Paris modelling show, there is a superb display of Mithril figures. Richard Poisson painted many of them, I am still searching for pictures of the rest.
Victoria Lamb This painter came to my attention with her "Rescue of Sister Joan", and here is more work of the same quality.
TW Figurines (Tom Weiss) It came out of nowhere, and is already one of the best painting sites on the web. Absolute top quality figures, and photography to match. Historical, SF and fantasy, all superbly executed in a refined black undercoat style. Highly recommended.
Land of the Diminutive Nice site, with a painting style I can relate to and perhaps aspire to one day.
  Back Burner
Rebel Yell Bob Kiff has one of the best value/quality combinations in the painting service world. These are figures you can be proud of at prices that will not cause heartburn.
Rackham Forums (Eng) Tons of excellent stuff here, from basing to NMM effects. And no need for O Level French.
Tincture Adept Excellent brushwork, interesting bases.

Terrain Includes terrain builders, sites with tips, and anything with grass on it.

Architectural Miniatures See below under manufacturers.
Atenociti's Workshop See below under manufacturers.
Paper Creek See below under manufacturers.
TM Terrain A new company offering a wide range of quality buildings and also a figure painting service.
Pendon Museum An inspirational museum, of which I am a patron. Although railway based, the terrain modelling here is of the highest quality and the groundbreaking techniques are applicable across the modelling world.
Manor House Workshop A great Italian site, with some excellent gallery images of buildings and figures. Absolute top quality.
Gary Chalk A very talented modeller, Gary's site covers buildings and related terrain features, as well as some of his well known illustrations.
GW Skirmish Terrain A very nice feature on basic terrain textures, with general application.
War Factory Lots of good stuff, confusingly presented.
Realistic Modelling Services One of the most talented producers of terrain working today. Lovely trees too. Check out the gallery for loads of top quality pictures.
TerraGenesis By general consensus, the best site concentrating on terrain making techniques. An absolute feast of buildings, scenery and just about anything else.
Epicast Some very nice resin bases, but on the expensive side. Okay for one offs and specials. They have other stuff too, like planets and buildings.
Armorcast Clearly another company I have missed... A huge range of resin pieces, and I have to own those Egyptian obelisks.
Timecast See below under manufacturers.
Micro Arts Some excellent bases here, with some spot-on colouring to emulate.
  Ground Forge More great bases!
Worldmakers A new site covering terrain modelling.

Old School Wargamers I don't normally link to Yahoo Groups, but will make an exception here. OSW is a group dedicated to wargaming in the old style. I am not entirely sure what that means yet, but I like the cut of their jib.

20mm Plastics
Plastic Soldier Review Great site. A remarkably comprehensive site covering 1:72nd (i.e. 20mm) figures. Pictures, reviews, history of re-issues, news. They do the lot. If you can't find it here... Also excellent set of links to all manufacturers which I haven't bothered to duplicate here.
HaT Industrie The company that helped to turn around plastics. Now offering a mind-boggling range of figures that people would have killed for in the 70s.
Ancient Armies A great site exclusively covering plastics - just about everything you need to know, and some inspiring pictures as well. Contains links to all the major manufacturers.
De Bellis Ludis cum Homunculis Mollibus

"Playing (DBx) wargames with Little Plastic Men". I think that says it all. A charming little site.

Italeri If these aren't the very best plastic figures around, I'd like to see their betters.
Zvezda The new kid on the block, already producing figures of superb quality.
Paddy Shoesmith Another site full of plastic enthusiasm.
Airfix OO/HO Figures A nostalgia trip of the first order.
Airfix Kits And yet more nostalgia...
Newline Designs An interloper here, as they sell only metal figures, but the 20mm range is specifically designed to fit with plastics, and can also fill the inevitable gaps that arise. And they are excellent little figures too. Highly recommended.
20mm Figure Histories
Vintage20Mil Now here is an impressive work of erudition and scholarship, producing a massive hit of pure nostalgia. Remember all those figures available back in the days? Well here is more information about them than you thought was good for you. Fascinating stuff.
25/28mm Figure Histories
Miniatures Atlas Every historical miniature from every company ever, anywhere. Pure folly. Let's hope he pulls it off.
The Stuff of Legends A labour of love - trying to track each and every F/SF miniature ever made.

Manufacturers
1st Corps One of the top 28mm manufacturers working today. Lovely ranges of ACW, Greeks, ancient Indians and even starship troopers. The horse ranges are excellent and warrant a special request.

A&A Miniatures Worth keeping an eye on these boys. The Sassanid heavies are very nice indeed, but something horrible happened with the lights. Some pictures would be nice...
Amazon Miniatures Okay. Now it is clear that Amazon are fast becoming one of the biggest and widespread companies in the hobby. What they don't yet have is many quality figures, which puzzles me in the extreme - get some better sculptors! But they do have some, including some excellent dollies (figure armatures), and they also sell Two Hour Wargames rules in the UK. So check out the site, and dig deep.
Andrea Miniatures Some rather nice 30mm Romans and 'Camelot' mediaevals, and a few 54mms too! Andrea also market a range of paints of Vallejo quality.
Architectural Miniatures John Boadle is the brains behind this company. Basically, he makes the best buildings and scenery in the business. A fitting successor to Peter Gilder, and you don't get much better praise than that.
Atenociti's Workshop A promising start from a new company in the terrain field. They sell some excellent, good value kits and promise much more - WWII to come. Also superb custom trees, tools, terrain bits and bobs, and base textures.
Artitec A Dutch model company which makes an interesting range of architectural items, and some very nice boats.
Artizan Designs Mike Owen was always one of my favourite sculptors at Foundry, and now he runs Artizan, a company to watch. I really like the Italians and the Moors, and I expect we can look forward to many more.
Assault Group Lovely 28mm early Samurai from promising sculptor, Seth Nash.
AB Easily the best 15mm miniatures available (so good they look like 25s) and now producing some fantastic 20mm WWII figures. One of my favourite manufacturers.
Baccus There is a rapidly growing group of gamers who play in 6mm scale. I can see why, and have often been tempted for large scale battles. It is just the painting that worries me... The most vocal of advocates for micro games is Baccus, and you will find their website an excellent starting point.
Battle Honours An amazing range of 15mm figures and vehicles, including Old Glory's legendary selection, and now branching out into 28mm moderns.
Bicorne A company that has been around for many years, now enjoying a renaissance in the shape of a superb ECW range. They also have flag finials, which are not easy to find.
Black Hat A classy new range of 18mm figures for Martian Empires - think Barsoom, but don't mention it. Excellent walkers. See also Oozlum Games.
Bolt Action Miniatures Only WWII, and only 28mm. But for a newish company they have a formidable range of figures already, and the quality is coming on in leaps and bounds.
Builders in Scale An obscure American model railroad company, but they supply some very interesting items, namely wooden shingles, various building kits and the best artificial snow I have yet found.

Calpe Miniatures For a long time Peter Fitzgerald has operated this company in a distinctly low key style. Occasionally a tempting picture or advert would surface, or an insider would confirm that he was still working, a stealth sculptor on a mission. So we sort of trusted that he was out there, we knew he was making Prussians, Prussians and more Prussians, and we knew that his quality and commitment were first rate. At last we have a website where we can see these truly excellent 'very big 25mm' figures on display. The gallery is a little short on content, but that will doubtless improve over time.
Capitulation A new range of 30mm, slender, elegant models for the period 1743-48. French to start with, Dutch and Sicilians to follow. And if you ask nicely, British too eventually.
Castaway Arts Another Australian manufacturer, new to me, who is putting out some very nice figures. The camels are the best I have found in 28mm.
Chiltern Miniatures Somehow omitted from the listings since, well, the start. Check out the excellent ranges of 28mm character figures, Greek Gods, Victoriana etc etc. Also the UK distributor for GHQ.
Connoisseur Peter Gilder's Connoisseur figures, with Foremost and Hinchliffe before them, hold a prominent place in my hobby pantheon. I own hundreds of these classic figures, and I still like the big, bold, animated image they convey. Aging slightly now, and the range always was variable in quality, but the horses are great.
Conquest I am not sure this is a new company, but it has some very nice new sculpts of woodland Indians in 28mm, and around 50 of them at that. They are not up to Perry standard (what is?) but they are right up there. Keep an eye on this sculptor, Todd Harris.
Copplestone Castings Mark Copplestone's latest vehicle, which should ensure more quality releases from one of the world's top sculptors. Future Wars features an excellent selection of near future characters - very 'Matrix' in feel, and I love the skateboarders. You can also find more figures for Colonial Africa, and some great character figures for the Between the Wars period.
Cromwell A manufacturer of scale model kits, now diversifying into 20mm single piece resin tanks and vehicles for wargaming. The quality and detail is stunning and the prices very reasonable.
Crocodile Games A new manufacturer to me, with some top quality figures in the Egyptian fantasy mould. I am tempted, and that is before the Greeks arrive.
Crusader Miniatures A promising start from this new company founded by Mark Sims. Not inexpensive, but good post-Foundry school style and quality.
Elite Miniatures Elite carry the standard for big, bold, animated figures in the classic Peter Gilder mould. Masters of "36 man battalion" gaming.
Empire Miniatures A new, slowly building range of 28mm late medieval figures that I think you will find to your liking.
Essex Miniatures One of the oldest companies serving the hobby, still producing some good, easily painted figures.
Eureka   Large ranges of all sorts of stuff, but mentioned here because of Pax Limpopo, the brilliant Victorian Science Fiction range.
EVM Dave Woodward runs Ever Victorious Miniatures, who are a well established painting company that turn out some extremely nice stuff at amazingly low prices. I have heard nothing but good things about them, and you can check out their figures in the flesh at most of the major Northern shows. Dave is another one of those great blokes of the hobby. Your main problem will be getting on the waiting list....
Fighting 15s An excellent painting service and UK stockists of much Eureka stuff. See also Ooozlum Games.
Flagship Games An exotic selection of rules and models that needs to be seen to be believed. I really like the submersibles and the Starship! SF combat rules.
Flames of War A WWII ruleset, but the site is inspirational for anyone interested in the period or painting.
Foundry The best 28mm figures made so far, largely based on the prodigious sculpting talents of the Perry twins and Mark Copplestone. A massive range, a gallery to inspire, and an excellent article on painting by Kevin Dallimore is all here. Remember, pack contents may vary.
Forgeworld Beautiful resin models, at prices to make your eyes water.
FreeBooter Werner Klocke, proprietor. Fantastic, elegant figures of the highest quality but with prices in the Rackham/GW stratosphere.
Front Rank Hardly a new company, but a very new site. Image intensive, but well worth it, showing one of the premier ranges of figures in the hobby. The figures are not always to my taste, but I manage to find a few that tempt money from the wallet, and the Wars of the Roses range may yet break my resolve. Nevertheless, hugely popular and justifiably famed for their extensive SYW and horse and musket ranges. Check out the new Marlburians.
Games Workshop No introduction needed. Still producing some beautiful figures, at prices that will turn your hair white. Worth watching to see what they produce for the Lord of the Rings miniature game licence.
General de Brigade David Brown's very popular rule set for Napoleonics. I really didn't enjoy them when I tried them, but I am going to have another crack as I doubt so many people can be wrong!
GHQ Microarmour with detail that will amaze you. Also ships, figures, some pretty cool diggers, and my favourite terrain system in the shape of Terrain Maker.
GMB Without a doubt, the very best miniature flags available. Quite beautiful in their colouring, stylistically perfect and academically accurate.
Goffy Resin stowage, shells, figures etc for 1/72nd scale tanks.
Gothic Horror I really don't know much about this new company, or the sculptor, but I have seen the range in the flesh and they are first class - up to Citadel standard with prices at wargame market levels. And don't be put off by the subject matter, there are some very useable figures here for many periods.
Gramodels Where else are you going to get a 1/76th Char de Rupture 2C? Excellent kits, and a quaintly brusque attitude to customer service.
Green Scene A very wide range of scenic materials is available from this UK manufacturer, including many items not found in other ranges, including Sea Foam. Very good gravel too!
Gripping Beast Fast becoming a small scale rival to Foundry, with each new range improving in quality, these are lovely 28mm miniatures - the Sassanids are among my all time favourites.
Hasslefree Excellent range of females, fantasy types and martial artist 28mm figures, sculpted by Kev White who is a man who knows what he is doing with a sculpting tool. Also stock some wondrous diorama bases by the talented Simon.
H G Walls The well known American building source.
HLBSC   Dinosaurs, 28mm miniatures, WWI vehicles, 1/48th tanks, 1/48th modern figures, Bog a Ten rules and more. Great stuff.
International Models Importers of an amazing range of scenic materials, including Magic Carpet grass matting and Sea Foam in value boxes. Highly recommended.
Kallistra 10mm figures and 1/300th spcae ships. Lots of terrain type stuff too.
Langton Miniatures Top quality naval models and associated terrain and buildings from many periods, and a beautiful line in floatplanes (another Siggins weakness) to boot. Langton also sell a number of decent rule sets.
Little Big Men Studios My tip for world domination in 2005. Stunningly good shield transfers that will make your troops look worryingly professional. And a painting service to boot.
  Mark Fenlon

A new company that is making some very nice 28mm ACW miniatures, especially the horses which I rate very highly.

MIG Mig Jimenez is probably the most famous tank modeller in the world, and arguably among the best. He has now gone into business making a range of accessories. Mainly of interest are the excellent pigments that he sells for weathering effects. A new range of 1/76th tanks and crew figures is also underway.
Milicast If you need a 1/76th tank or softskin, however obscure, chances are you will find it here. Resin kits, model quality, and excellent service.
Mindstalkers/Manor House Very very nice medieval figures from Italy. Very very big too (40mm). And very very expensive. Sister company to Manor House Workshop who make that tasty scenery.
Mirliton This Italian manufacturer has some very nice 25mm and 15mm figures, including medievals and Napoleonics. Excellent galleries offering plenty of inspiration.
Mithril Miniatures Still very much a favourite company of mine. I very much like the elongated, elegant foot figures, but the horses are rather odd.
MMS An excellent range of 1/76th white metal tanks and softskins. Always tempting subjects, none of the hassle of resin kits, and the best detail in the field.
Monolith Designs Producer of some of the nicest resin buildings around - check out the Egyptian Tombs and the tribal idols. Excellent stuff.
Navigator Miniatures A steadily growing range of 28mm figures, many of which are very appealing. I particularly like the Parthians.
Newbold World I have to hold my hands up and say Newbold World is not to my taste, being a man who has major problems with daft fantasy names. But. Ian Newbold is doing all this from scratch, slowly and properly, and is learning as he goes. The result is that I have already seen figures I like, and even figures that impress. So what was curiosity and dismissal has turned quickly into respect. I like the cut of his jib, and I really hope he succeeds.
Newline Designs A small range of figures, superbly executed. See also under Plastics above for info on the 20mm range. Stockists of Parroom Station in the UK.
North Star Some very nice, if inconsistent, 1/48th figures and the excellent Project X live here.
Oozlum Games A small design group, centred on the old Dragonlords fanzine team, who are producing some very interesting rulesets and game ideas.
Paper Creek A high quality range of building papers in all the popular railway scales, including S which works for 28mm. Samples en route.
Parroom Station Another supplier of quirky Victoriana, of which one can never have too much. Some slightly wayward sculpting here and there, but great imagination on display. The clockwork soldiers are must haves. Check out Newline's link for UK sourcing.
Perry Miniatures The new company formed by the Perry Twins. Having left Foundry, their historical output is improving all the time - the horses are notably better. So far Brunswickers, ECW, AWI, Samurai and Crusades have been released, which isn't bad going. To my mind, these are the best historical figures you will find in 28mm.
Peter Pig An amazing range of 15mm figures and vehicles, 1/600th ACW ironclads and all sorts of other bits and pieces at remarkable prices. PP also publish some of the more innovative rule sets around.
Pulp Miniatures Recently discovered, but a good range that has some useful figures - especially good if you are into the Between the Wars period.
Principles of War While I am cantankerous as any gamer over rules, these come as close as any to being a set I am happy to play with.
Rackham The best fantasy figures I've ever seen. In fact, they are right up there with the best small scale figures I've ever seen as well. Awesome painting, fantastic photography, but a distinctly unremarkable game system in Confrontation. But who cares with figures like these? There is also a news page offering monthly updates, a forum in English, a shop in English and a UK user group, which has its own forum (confused?). Recently released are Hybrid (boardgame with figures in the Space Hulk mould) and Ragnarok (fantasy mass battles).
Renegade Miniatures A new company set to make quite an impact on the 28mm market. The ECW figures are excellent and more ranges are appearing all the time.
Redoubt While most of the ranges are less than stellar, there is much to admire at the Redoubt site (but not the site itself, sadly). The Indians, Trojans, horses and equipment are all worth checking out.
Satyr Studios Drew Williams is behind this promising new venture. Some really nice sculpts on view. Check out the excellent Gods!
Scale Link Ltd Classy producers of etched brass accessories, including foliage, fencing and a range of WWI figures.
Scheltrum A slightly confusing website containing, somewhere, the excellent range of Scheltrum Victoriana.
Schleich Schleich make a huge range of plastic animals, dinosaurs, forts and knights. Great value.
Schulcz A German company I re-discovered recently. They sell a massive range of architectural modelling items.
Scale Model Accessories A wide range of 1/76th vehicles, accessories and decals, ideal for your tanks. Check out the etched machine gun belts and gun sights!

Spencer Smith Miniatures These figures were around when I was starting out in the hobby. Now metal rather than plastic, and at the forefront of the Old School movement.
Steve Barber Steve Barber offers a varied and exciting range of 25mm figures, some excellent buildings, and, recently, some weird and wonderful stuff. The site will explain, but look for the 42mm Samurai and the 10mm ancients. A thoroughly nice chap as well.
SuperFigs Like these a lot. Quality sculpts, nice 30's style look on some of them, and you can let your imagination run riot on colour schemes.
Thoroughbred Despite having very little interest in the land war, I have an enduring love of ACW ironclads. These are the best around. Two small but outstanding galleries.
Thunderbolt Mountain A small, expensive but very nice range of figures by the talented Tom Meier. I like the Arthurian range and the individual weapons are the best around.
Timecast A start-up company in the over populated field of resin buildings, but these are some of the best around.
Tiranti The sculpting and moulding specialist. Silicone rubbers, modelling clays, plasters, resins, white metals, and all necessary tools can be found here, along with excellent tutorial leaflets.
Too Fat Lardies Points on the board for the brilliant name. They also make some very interesting rule sets, emphasising friction and history.
Two Hour Wargames A new company producing some unusual and very good rulesets. Legends of Araby impressed me a lot, Guns & Girls less so. Graphically challenged they may be, but design wise they are no mugs. See Amazon link for UK sourcing.
Vendel Miniatures Colin Patten used to sculpt and paint for Gripping Beast, and now does the same for Vendel. The figures are of the same characteristic style, and the horses remain, well, debatable at best. Nevertheless, hugely popular ranges and growing all the time. See also the Painting Service.
Venexia Italian 15mms. Several ranges, growing steadily. Tempting!
Vis Bellica A modern set of ancient rules, already receiving high praise from those not wedded to DBx, WHAB, etc.
Warhammer Historical Headed up by Rob Broom, this is the wide ranging team that brings you Warhammer Ancient Battles, Warhammer ECW and doubtless many more periods yet to come. News, forthcoming rules and army lists all feature here.
  Wargames Foundry

See Foundry

Westwind Productions An up and coming 28mm manufacturer, sort of a better looking cousin of Old Glory. They also stock the excellent SuperFigs, of which I am a helpless consumer.
Woodland Scenics Not cheap, but probably the widest and one of the most useful range of scenic materials. Combined with International Models, 4D and Green Scene, they account for virtually all my terrain needs.

Magazines
Wargames Illustrated The UK's best miniature wargaming magazine.
Vae Victis The first and probably still the best of the European triumvirate. Colour throughout, stirring images and quite often rule sets and articles on miniatures. Every issue has a boardgame, along with reviews and computer game coverage. All for £4. French language. Fans of fantasy and SF subjects will find sister publication Ravage more to their taste, which shares the same qualities and production values. I also buy Figurines and SteelMasters from the VV publisher, H&C, which is surely the most exciting in the hobby.
Dadi & Piombo Italian, stylish and a very nice web site to boot. Much of the site now has an English translation.
Wargames The latest contender for top European magazine, and rather good it is too. Spanish with English translation supplied, the articles and pictures are first rate, and the layout is bang up to date. A great magazine, with all the signs of improvements coming.
Military Modelling  I have been buying this magazine for twenty seven years, so it must have something going for it! There is always something of interest, and occasionally there is an article of such relevance or skill that the annual price of admission becomes negligible.
Finescale Modeler An infrequent purchase, as any given issue's emphasis can be quite distant from my interests, but as with MilMod, occasionally a gem surfaces (or a bunch of gems). The annual special editions are usually well worth buying.
White Dwarf For me, an essential purchase for the inspirational miniatures, painting and terrain. I also have a low level, passive Space Marine and Warhammer Empire fetish, so it keeps me honest. There is a nostalgic factor too, having almost every issue since Number 1!
MWAN If, like me, you enjoy a good long read on hobby subjects, you will find no better magazine than MWAN under the editorship of Hal Thinglum. Perhaps past its best as far as the content goes, but still full of enthusiasm and ideas. NB MWAN has now changed editirial hands, adopted an anti-UK stance, and looks set for glory...
Cry Havoc! Rackham's house magazine. Oh my. If you like your magazines in the luxurious mould, look no further. Stunning layout and artwork, some of the best terrain tutorials you will see, and inspirational stuff throughout. It comes at a ludicrous price though.
Figure International An international magazine produced by the Andrea people in Spain. Occasionally light on content, but usually full of wonderful images. Large scale mainly, but the smaller scales are featured as well. There was even an article on wargame figures in recent issues.
Fictional Reality This is a free, downloadable PDF magazine concerntrating on fantasy subjects. I must have tried half a dozen times to download various issues, without success, but the latest one worked fine. Well worth a look, with similar content to Cry Havoc, at the other end of the price scale.
Minitracks A new magazine from France concentrating on Braille Scale (1/72nd and smaller) armour models. Expensive, but rather good.

Model Related
On the Way! An excellent site covering 1/72nd scale armour. No 1/76th, because the site owner is sizist (!), in a nice way, but all good stuff nevertheless. [LINK REPAIRED 25/10/04]
Alex Clark One of the top braille scale modlellers showcases his talents.
Missing Links The site for armour modellers in all scales. Includes the Braille Scale section for 1/72nd and smaller. Some remarkable models on show in the galleries, plus forums, tips, research and reference. Excellent links as well.
Landships An outstanding site concentrating on WWI tanks. Tons of information, lots of inspirational images.
Metals of Honour Listed here because it contains a gallery of Bill Horan's work, and that makes it virtually unique. Bill Horan is my hero in the field miniature painting and in my view is the very best there is. I think the images speak for themselves.
Ma.K./SF3D
Maschine Krieger - Unofficial An excellent introductory site, links and listings etc.
Maschinen Krieger Info Another very good overview site.
Kow Yokoyama The homepage of the Ma.K. creator, often down.
RoboterKampf Excellent modelling site covering Ma.K. and much other stuff. Talented and interesting guy. Here you will find a master list of all the Ma.K. variants, and models of many of them.
Krueger's Krieger Another excellent Ma.K. modelling site. Tons of images. A modeller who could stand with the best in the world, in any field. Weathering skills to make one deeply envious. Highly recommended.
FichtenFoo More great modelling. Not entirely Ma.K. oriented, as it also covers gundam and other mecha, but still very high quality.
A Haunted Gallery Yet more modelling of an extremely high standard.
How to Enjoy Ma.K. A Japanese site with lots of unusual resources and, again, great images of models.
SUS4 System Yet more superbly made kits.
Ma.K./SF3D A Japanese site, again with loads of quality images.
Trooper PX A huge resource on the subject. Many links.
Sci Fi Model Builder An excellent forum where the top builders show and discuss techniques.

Flats
British Flat Figure Society At last, a decent site showing off the wonderful world of flat figures. I am sure there are more out there, and I will keep looking. At least you have some links to help you on your way.

Art
Don Troiani One of my favourite military artists. You can find samples of his prints here, and many more on the web at large.
Keith Rocco Another favourite, though very few pictures have made it on line so far.
AeroArt A double value site. Not only do they have some decent Roman artwork, you can also see the amazing large scale figures from the St Petersburg Collection - technically oustanding, but just that little lacking in flair.
Guiseppe Rava Famed for his Vae Victis covers, Mr Rava also paints for HaT, Italeri and Warhammer Historical.
Cleeve Prints Many of you will know Steve Dyer's name from the many, many Foundry figures he superbly painted. He now has a high quality military pictures and prints website. There are some excellent prints here, many of which I have not seen before.

Misc
Chars et Blindes Francais An amazing site with tons of information on French tanks, particularly the Char B1 bis - including a list of all the names.
The Black Brunswickers Fantastic site covering my favourite Napoleonic troops.
Grosser Generalstab We need more sites like this. Page after page of wonderful uniform plates, from sources one would be lucky to see, let alone own.
Historex Uniform Plates Hard to beat the pedigree here: Historex and Eugene Leliepvre make for some of my favourite plates. And not just for the nostalgia value.
The Roman Army More stuff on Romans than I thought existed.
Da Vinci Condotta Unusual, and not a little cool.
Major General Tremorden Rederring's Colonial Wargames Page Priceless. If only all miniatures sites were this good.
Sir Garnet's Military History & Wargaming Site A newish site with some excellent articles on colonial warfare. Promising.
  DBA Online Remarkable.
Link Repaired  Fanaticus An excellent resource for DBx gamers, covering all the bases in some style. Moderator Chris Brantley is enthusiasm incarnate.
Vietnam Wargames Not my period, but this is an impressive, newly established site for Vietnam gamers, with some very impressive info and pics. Webmaster Andrew Thomson is part of The Iron Brigade so quality is assured.
Miniatures Hobby Timeline A fascinating piece of research, still building.
Starship Combat News A comprehensive resource that helped me get to the bottom of the numerous SF rule systems, in the hope of finding one where you don't have to cross off boxes. An excellent effort.
Frothers/Colonel Marbles A multi layered site, unified by a love of figures and painting. Populated by largely mad individuals. Focussed more on the fantasy and SF areas of the hobby, but since they endorse 'crossover' historical figures, and the taste is eclectic (to say the least), this just adds to the fun - check out the "Nubians". Monthly reviews of new releases. Loads of photos. Good links too. A great discovery.
DiceCon 2006 A new boardgames convention in Glasgow that I am supporting, now in its fifth year. Check it out, and get along if you can.
Revised Link

Skirmish Wargames Mike Blake and his talented team of table top titans, devoted to big figures (54mm and more conversions than you can shake a stick at), and innovative games while radiating more enthusiasm than Pollyanna. The combined gaming age of this group is a stunning 762 years. Really nice site too. RECENTLY UPDATED 3rd JUNE 2005.
Elheim 20mm An excellent site covering 20mm WWII.
Waterloo in 28mm This is kind of where I was aiming. Fallen a bit short, to be perfectly honest. Lovely buildings.
Paper Worlds An extensive resource for paper models and figures.
  Cardboard Warriors And another.
Brabantini I don't normally do links to newsgroups, but since this is the only way to find Brabantini, I am relenting. Oddly named, but one of the best resources for paper figures.
Paper Shipwright I ran into this chap at a recent model show. He makes the most amazing card ships. Unless you looked closely you would not be able to tell them apart from plastic or metal models. We just need to convince him to move away from 1:250th! I am sure you can come up with some uses.
Origami Figures Remarkable. Wayne Ko makes origami figures - Samurai in 28mm, and Napoleonics in 15mm. And they look a lot better than some metal figures I could mention.
worldworksgames Okay, so we all have dreams of making the epic terrain piece, where our figures can roam at will in hyper realistric scenery. But most of us never get round to it. If you play SF or F, may I suggest worldworksgames.
Dundjinni Odd name, very nice piece of software. Ostensibly a program for building dungeon layouts for D&D or similar, but with a bit of thought you can also use it quite happily to make all sorts of hobby related maps. I am a happy user, it is good value, and the forums are excellent. Only drawback is that there are issues if you wish to use the art supplied for commercial purposes.
Japanese Flags A very comprehensive site. A must for Samurai fans, if only for ideas.
Samurai Archives A huge resource covering just about any aspect of the samurai. Mainly text, we could do with some more pictures. But then if you have got as many Turnbull books as my local library, you won't need them.
Last Alliance An excellent news site bringing you all the possible information you might need on Lord of the Rings. There are also excellent galleries, terrain articles and features. Quality is variable, but overall you will find plenty to look at here. I must get myself a Fatty Bolger.
The One Ring Another site with some good, and not so good, work on Lord of the Rings miniatures.
The Lance & Longbow Society I have just re-kindled my interest in the War of the Roses, so these gentlemen will be coming in handy.

Victorian Science Fiction Showcases
Humans
Automatons
Vehicles
Monsters

This is a part of the might Colonel Marble's empire, and showcases all (well, as many as they can find) the available figures, vehicles and monsters in this popular and highly inventive period. I only wish there were equivalents for all the periods I am interested in. Great stuff.
Warlord's Cloudships Project Works in progress, but looking rather good.
Alterra One would need quite a bit of immersion in Japanese robot lore to understand this page, but I just like the models and scratchbuilds.
George R R Martin The famous fantasy author collects medieval 54mm soldiers. Some nice shots, and some good links as well.
Prussian Napoleonic Uniform Plates I love uniform plates, as you may have gathered, but these are among the most beautiful I have seen. Gorgeous stuff.
WWII Uniforms A selection of real uniforms and equipment, helpfully photographed. Good stuff on Poles, as it is a Polish site....

Boardgames
Content Game Cabinet Ken Tidwell's pioneering site is no longer actively maintained, but it is very much referenced on a daily basis. Many of my Sumo reviews are archived here, the rest (issues 22-44) I will try and get up on the Web as soon as I can (but it is a huge job).
BoardGameGeek Very much a core site of the boardgame hobby. It covers all types of games (except RPGs) but with a very strong emphasis on German Games. Essentially a database with a number of very interesting value added additions, it has grown rapidly to encompass reviews, comments and a controversial rating system. There is even a weekly web broadcast. Spend a month here and you will continually find hidden depths and more content than you will have time to absorb. The miniatures hobby has no current equivalent, but that would be an interesting development.
ConsimWorld Another core site, with a mixture of content shifting well away from German Games towards wargames. The format here is a bulletin board/forum with rolling discussions on subjects. Also plays host to many company support and magazine forums, which can be heated, annoying, entertaining or interesting in equal measure. Similar in many ways to The Miniatures Page in content. I visit this site several times daily.
Web Grognards The final core site, this time exclusively covering wargames. Presentation not the best, but loads of content.
SpielBoy Irreverent, very funny, rude and Ms. Maes. A work of genius.
GameKultur Where games and art meet. Somewhat pretentious by definition, but it carries it off more than well enough.
Chris Farrell A games blog that has consistently high quality content, covering a wide range of game types. One of my favourite sites on the Net. I read it in tandem with the two sites below.
Rick Heli Less blog, more game review resource, but plenty of opinion and content here.
Milton Soong Milton's blog is similar to Chris's, they often share gaming sessions, but has a slant towards miniatures because Milton loves his toys.
Games Journal Greg Aleknevicus and his team write some of the best analytical reviews and discursive articles on the Web. An excellent monthly journal, always something to make me think.
Game Report Peter Sarrett has slightly different taste in games to me, but that should not detract from his excellent reviews and opinions, which are well made and interesting. One of my favourite sites.
GameWire Game news, as it happens! If you like rumours, release schedules and gossip about the merest hint of the possibility of publication, this is your site. Enthusiasm is permanently notched to 11.
Luding A huge database of games, and related links. I contributed several thousand entries in the early days, and they have been swallowed up and left behind. Remarkable.
Pagat A massive resource covering card games. Rules, history, special packs, it's all here.
Brett & Board Mik Svellov's site with reviews, news and a massive selection of gaming links. The place for Essen coverage. Strangely quiet of late.
Greg Schloesser The lair of Greg Schloesser, one of the most prolific and respected reviewers in the hobby today. Tons of reviews.
Tom Vasel Tom Vasel's home site, which is a one stop shop accessing his amazingly prolific and varied output. 300+ reviews, 50+ interviews, Dicetower podcasts, and more games commentary than a man could ask for.
RPGNet The premier resource for RPG related content, but also covers boardgames and other tangential topics.
David Parlett In my view, David Parlett is the leading expert on card and boardgames in the world. His fascinating reference books should be on every gamer's shelf.
Gaming Report A curious site, that seems to run from press releases, but very popular anyway. Mainly fantasy and SF.
Conventions Essen Spiel in Essen is the big one, held annually in October. If you thought you had been to a big convention, Essen is ten times bigger. Go at least once if you have the slightest interest in boardgames, RPGs or even wargames.
ProtoSpiel An annual get together for would be game designers.
The Gathering Alan Moon's Gathering is an invitation only event, but as the site says.... people will pay to see the man and namecheck this legendary game playing frenzy. Alan pulls in the big names - designers, publishers and wannabees. The place to get your design seen. I went to the first one, and if it were anywhere but Ohio I might be tempted back! Pretty ropey picture of Alan, I think.
DiceCon Ellis Simpson's Scottish boardgames convention now runs twice a year and is growing in popularity. Those that have been have nothing but good reports. Apparently I am to be a VIP guest next year, so can no longer avoid going! Nice web site too.
Design Resources Board Game
Designer's Forum
What is says on the tin. Good resources, poor accessibility, poor communications. I sometimes wonder if they do anything at all.
T,T&T A fascinating page of links to game design articles by Shannon Appelcline, one of the most prolific game reviewers in action today.
S.A.Z. The German game designer's guild has an active forum (in English) and presence within the hobby. Mainly useful for its Yahoo group, resources, advice and a damn good party at Nuremberg each year.
Magazines Counter Effectively the only English language print magazine in circulation. Quarterly, it is as regular as clockwork, and huge. A typical issue will consist of 60 or more pages of solid text, covering German Games and other boardgames from the preceding three months or so. Also provides coverage of Essen and Nuremburg releases.
Perfidious Albion Charles Vasey's long running magazine covers history, historical analysis, historical design, historical games and history books. And little else, which is precisely what appeals. Here is the home of chaotic design, discussion, analysis, book reviews and a catholic taste in games. Priceless.
Panzerschreck Gary Graber is one of the most underrated and indeed unknown game designers in the business. A talented man, this is his regular magazine. Mainly wargames, but Gary also sells other titles including the excellent Playing Card Cricket.
Vae Victis Colour throughout, stirring images and every issue has a boardgame, along with articles, reviews and computer game coverage. All for £4. French language.
Against the Odds The newest, and many say the best, of the wargame magazines with a game in each issue. Games improving from a shaky start, consistently excellent and innovative graphic design by Craig Grando.
Awards International Gamers Awards A not for profit, international award to promote the best games designed each year, as opposed to those that sell the most. I am a juror, so a link is inevitable!
Resources Middle Earth CCG A superb resource for my favourite game.

Retail Outlets   (Under Construction)
Still to add airbrush suppliers
etc

U.K.

General Information The Model Shop Directory Sadly focussed on model railways, but at least someone has done it (and done it well). The good news is that model railways shops are often the only model shop for miles around, and carry all sorts of other ranges including kits, cars, GW, and sometimes even figures. At the very least you might find terrain, paints, brushes and Scalextric!
Models/Tools
London
4D/The Modelshop Suppliers of a vast range of modelling and design materials, casting supplies, tools, and also more scenic options than you might imagine exist. Also beautiful custom made trees, etched brass and dry transfers. Stockists of Green Scene and Graham Avis scenic materials. An excellent single source.
Books/Paint
London

Ian Allan
45/46 Lower Marsh
Waterloo
London SE1 7SG
020 7401 2100

The Ian Allan shop in Lower Marsh, London sells a large range of miltary books and also Vallejo paints. There are also shops in Birmingham, Cardiff and Manchester.
Art Supplies
London
Atlantis Art The largest artshop in London, and perhaps the country (I would like to see it if you know a larger store). Massive range of everything you could possibly need in the way of paints, brushes and related tools.
Miniatures
Evesham
Battle Honours
3, Shor Street
Evesham
Worcs WR11 3AT

01386 761511

A proper miniatures shop, selling Battle Honours 28mm, Old Glory 15s, Gripping Beast, Little Big Man Shield Transfers, TSS Terrain and GW. I only wish there were more like it, and in London too!
Art Supplies
London
Blade Rubber A rumber stamp shop, which may be useful to you at some stage! Noted here because of its excellent range of craft paints and unusual craft/arts items. I doubt there are many other shops where you can buy interference powders!
Model Soldiers/Paints
Bath
Bonaparte's An excellent shop selling model soldiers, kits, paints (even the legendary Printer's Ink) and a fantastic range of magazines. They do occasionally have Foundry figures for sale, and often well painted 28mm miniatures. Well worth a visit.
Miniatures/Books etc
Leigh on Sea
Caliver Books Quite probably the best stocked miniatures shop in Britain (unless you know different). Caliver sell anything they can fit into their gloriously 'stuffed' retail outlet. Miniatures from a whole range of companies (Front Rank, Copplestone, Renegade, TAG, Peter Pig, plastics, GW, Rackham etc), rules (homegrown and imports), terrain, paints, magazines, out of print stuff, so many books they line the walls, boardgames etc etc etc. A must visit.
Art Supplies
London
Cass Arts A unique shop, in that it discounts heavily, even on the good stuff like Winsor & Newton. For instance, at the moment (Dec 04) they are selling 37ml oils at half price. Sure, you can often buy cheaper online, but you know what I am getting at.
Models
London
Comet Miniatures A model shop (traditional) and another nextdoor that stocks anything SF, Fantasy or Media related. Garage kits, Gerry Anderson, Star Wars, Alien, Dr Who, Star Trek etc. Also sell supporting paints, specialist magazines etc. NB Both shops, although they do have rare and highly tempting stock, are VERY expensive when compared to other shops. Not to be confused with the model railway company of similar title.
Art Supplies
London
Cornelissen Probably my favourite shop in London. Even if I have nothing to get, I like to go in and have a good look round, often to the detriment of my wallet. Stockists of many brands of paint, including Winsor & Newton, Mussini, Pelikan Plaka, Liquitex, LeFranc & Bourgeois, Modern Options, etc. Also pigments, medium, brushes, books, palettes... I could go on.
Art/Tools/Airbrushes
London
Cowling & Wilcox Graphics design shop slap bang in Medialand, W1. All sorts of tempting stuff, tools, cutting boards etc, and a good stockist of airbrushes.
Art Supplies
London
Daler Rowney
12 Percy Street
London
W1T 1DW
020 7636 8241

It seems not even Daler Rowney want to advertise their flagship London store, which sits forlornly in a sidestreet in Fitzrovia. Often have solid bargains and some decent books.

Books
London

Foyles The most famous bookstore in London, and now transformed beyond belief. The days of dusty stacks and arcane till procedures are long gone, and missed! Excellent military section including Ospreys.
Games
Norwich
Games Room
29a Elm Hill Norwich NR31HG
01603 628140
Tucked away in one of the most beautiful parts of Norwich is this excellent, old style game shop. The sort of place where you find twenty year old OOP items alongside the very latest releases. A great little shop, and there is even a shelf of minis rules. Owner Mike knows his stuff and will chat for hours. The best advert for supporting your local game store I know.
Art Supplies
London
Green & Stone King's Road. Very posh. I can't resist going in here to look at the antique paints and cases. Lots of brands, including hard to find Golden, and an unrivalled selection of inks.

Gripping Beast

Models/Tools
Greater London
Hannants The masters of plastic kits - all scales, all subjects - but with a marked bias towards aircraft. If it isn't here, it is going to be very obscure indeed. Also make several types of decal sheet, and sell their own brand, Humbrol, Revell and Alclad paints. They also have a VERY large warehouse in Lowestoft in which one is allowed to browse. And dribble. Abandon all hope...
Models/Tools etc
Greater London
Harrow Model Shop
Now CLOSED
One of the best general model shops you are likely to find. Sometimes stock is a bit patchy, especially paints, but the range is amazing. Vallejo stockists. Recently moved premises.
Art Supplies
Cambridge
Heffers
15-21 King St
Cambridge
CB1 1LH
01223 568495
Plugging the locals again. Good range of art materials, brushes and craft paints.
Books
London
Henry Pordes The source of many bargain secondhand and remaindered books for me. An excellent military section, ever changing, and often decent titles in modelling, collecting and crafts fields. Also a huge range of art books, sometimes on military subjects.
Books
Online Only
Hersants An online and shows presence only, albeit a legendary one, but still one of the top five sources for books in the UK (this means I can't easily pick between Amazon, Caliver, Foyles, Hersants and Motorbooks). They are also launching an online kit service.
Models/Tools
London and Branches
Hobbystores Largely focussed on the radio control hobby, but still a good source of materials like balsa, metal sheet, large sheets of ply for basing, glues and paints.
Museum
London
Imperial War Museum If you haven't been to this museum recently, you are missing out. The remodelling is complete and the layout vastly improved. There is so much here on WWI, WWII and more recent wars that you can easily spend a day here. And free entry as well.
Games/Miniatures
Greater London
Leisure Games The best range in London. If Leisure don't have it, it is probably unavailable. Euros, RPGs, CCGs, Collectible Minis, wargames, GW, miniatures rules etc. Also stock a large range of miniatures, but no historical ranges. Look for Rackham, GW, West Wind, RAFM, Reaper, Dark Age, Mongoose, Dreampod, Foundry etc etc. Worth checking their excellent website or calling if you need something specific, but a trip is always worthwhile.
Games
Cambridge/Norwich
Lingard's Games Now my local sole surviving gameshop, apart from GW, and sadly there are better to be found... Stock is patchy at best, always seeming to have the game you wanted buy on your previous visit! Other branches in Norwich and Colchester.
Art/Tools/Airbrushes
London
London Graphic Centre Essentially a graphic design and art shop catering to the design and media industry in Soho and Covent Garden. Excellent ranges of paint and scalpels, and unusual stuff like airbrushes, Frisk and the best modelling scissors I have found!
Models
London etc
Modelzone The nationwide chain selling, well, just about everything. The London store has a very good range of kits, 20mm and 54mm plastics, paints (including Vallejo and Tamiya) and Woodland Scenics. Look out for huge sales at any time of the year, but especially in January. As long as I get there first!

Books
London and Oxford

MotorBooks Along with Foyles, one of the two best sources of military books in London. A truly dangerous place to shop, not least because of the shop assistants who may sneer you to death. Excellent range, top prices always, though sales do happen.
Artefacts
London
Museum Gallery Also known as It's All Greek. Lovely shop, just round the corner from Playin' Games. Stockists of all things ancient greek. Artefacts, vases, statues, and the most beautiful hoplite helmets you can imagine, cast in solid bronze. Start saving now.
Museum/Books etc
London
National Army Museum This is something of a forgotten gem for many, but it is still very much there and remains one of my favourite museums in London. Excellent galleries, a really good shop, and now putting on regular wargame events.
Games/Miniatures
London
Orc's Nest A central London game shop that has survived, against the odds, for over 20 years. Stockists of a huge range of RPG, CCG, boardgames and wargames. Also carry Rackham, Copplestone, Reaper, and Renegade miniatures among others. Customer service has moved, over the years, from HOSTILE to Mostly Harmless.
Games
London
Playin Games Without a doubt the best shop in central London for boardgames. Euros, RPGs, CCGs, traditional, wargames, cards, poker chips; the lot. Also carry a handful of miniatures when game related.
Models
Cambridge
R&D Models
23 Burleigh Street
Cambridge

Now my local model shop, and a very good old fashioned one it is too. It sells everything but minis.
Art Supplies
London
Stuart Stevenson Cornelissen's closest rival in terms of stock quality, but not in atmosphere! Still worth a visit.
Books
London and branches
Sussex Stationers
530 Oxford Street
London
W1C 1LP

Amazingly cheap bookshops selling the latest mainstream books at up to 50% off. Note, this is almost always cheaper than Amazon. These are not remainders, they are just inexpensive! Drawbacks: you have got to lug them home, you should check here before buying anything on impulse (or the pain is great), and the range is restricted. But there is always military stuff in stock and I am sure you have other interests as well...? As far as I know, no web site as yet - which would be great to check prices on!
Sculpting/Moulding
London
Alec Tiranti Ltd The one stop resource for moulding and sculpting supplies. Also carry ranges of craft paint, tools and brushes.
Model Soldiers/Paints
Books
London
Tradition of London An old style model soldier shop that has been around for yonks. Lots of toy soldiers, model soldiers, good books and magazines, occasionally 30mm flats, but nothing smaller. As befits its Mayfair address, not inexpensive. A great place to browse if you like this end of the hobby.
Model Soldiers/Paints
Books
London
Under Two Flags And the other old style model soldier shop - toy soldiers, model soldiers, magazines and books, including Ospreys and a decent selection of second hand. Sell Humbrol and Andrea Paints. Also known as "Under Two Credit Cards" because of its interesting prices. For instance, a copy of Soldatini here is £6.50, compared to £4.00 at Bonapartes. Ironically they don't really like taking credit cards unless you are spending a LOT. The staff are also grumpy and have no clue about fostering repeat business. Tourists and big spenders only!

Wallace Collection My favourite museum in London, mainly for its excellent selection of old masters and pleasant atmosphere. But they also have two rooms full of armour and weapons, some of which is Eastern in origin, which is why I list it here.

Another excellent artshop in London. Mail order of Plaka, Golden, Rembrandt, Rowney, Winsor & Newton and many other quality paints and mediums. The only stockist of the excellent Chromacolor range I know. Excellent range of art technique books.

Winsor & Newton To my mind still the best there is. Sadly their excellent central London shop closed some years ago and nothing has emerged to replace it. We are therefore left with the likes of Cornelissen, Wheatsheaf and Cass Arts to get our fix, along with the other Premier Art Centres listed on the site. But finding pristine Series 7s is no longer an easy matter.

For me, the best military/hobby bookshop I have ever found. Any better, please let me know! Nowhere else can you find such a variety of titles and depth of stock. An absolute must visit if you are in Paris. Always highly dangerous for the wallet. Retail outlet for the almighty publishing empire that is Histoire & Collections but they stock publications from hundreds of publishers.

Model Shop
Paris
E.O.L. A model shop so large it occupies three sites, with a megastore on the way! This is the real thing. Models from floor to ceiling with paints (the hard to find Gunze Sangyo included), tools and all related paraphernalia. A must visit.

Les Invalides Surely the best museum anywhere for us Horse & Musket fans? Plenty on offer here, with gallery after gallery of uniforms, paintings, and more atmosphere than most people can handle. It also has a dangerous bookhsop.

Rue de Douai An amazing street with no less than five model shops. Mainly model railways specialists, but you will find general model supplies. Near Place de Clichy.
